The Philadelphia instrumental group, famous for backing all the great Gamble-Huff productions in the 70s, rejoiced in the name “MFSB”. They claimed it stood for “Mother Father Sister Brother”. LAMF it did. (And someone reviewed Miles Davis’ autobiography and claimed that it turned on understanding the several different meanings of “motherfucker”. It didn’t really, but it’s a lovely point to be able to make in a Sunday supplement.)

This guy Vinnie I know calls ‘em “Muddafuckahs”. Calls me that too, sometimes, in the singular, of course. Being from the hinterlands, I’ve never heard of these Motherfuckers. We did have a performance art collective in the undergoround scene in Alvin, Texas in those days, but it got busted up by Roger and the Ranch Hands, a homophobic local band that took exception to the way the collective, which called itself the Revolutionary Armadillo Liberation Front (RALF), satirized them. Though Roger, the lead singer, did call the RALFistas Motherfuckers, as I recall.

Wasn’t it true that Frank Zappa was originally going to call his band “The Motherfuckers”? Nay-saying by record labels made him change it to “The Mothers of Invention”. Good thing that – offense for the sake of offence dates pretty badly, and “TMoI” is actually a pretty cool band name.
