If you think Yoshimi is great, you should check out the Soft Bulletin from 1999, some critics’ pick for album of the year. Even though Yoshimi outsold SB (and is probably more “fun”), the Soft Bulletin is an amazing listen. And not to geek out too much, but it’s “She Don’t Use Jelly” not Tangerine, and “Thank You Jack White” was originally off an EP released after Yoshimi.

Before I read roublen’s comment I was going to say that the Flaming Lips rule but it’s unfortunate that the first song on “Yoshimi” is a rip-off of that famous terrorist anthem. Anyway, there was apparently a big hubbub about it when the album first came out and the band claimed they’d never in their recollection even heard “Father and Son,” which may be true but I’d doubt the recollection is correct. Stevens apparently took ‘em to court and they agreed to a profit-splitting settlement.

I really like the drawings in their album player window. I heard them live opening for Beck, and apart from “Tangerines” I didn’t really care for them. But the album is good so far, the first song reminds me a lot of Cat Stevens “Father & Son”
