There is a competitive element but not in a sense of wanting to beat anybody. A circle of contacts usually provides a variety of approaches and themes and these can be appreciated in their own right without feeling bested. Not to say there isn't the regular mixed "gah!" and admiration with some of the more skilled works. I'd say generally my photography has improved but my most popular pic is from 10 years ago. I'm here.

What would be interesting to know is whether the competitive element inseperable from a social site like Flickr makes us better photographers.

The Flickrites certainly hope so; their previous project was a multi-player online game, and they've tried to bring ludic elements along with them to the site.

I'm another not closely connected, but as mentioned I've been lurking here for a while. This makes two posts in nearly as many days. At that rate, I may even post on a more topical (for CT) thread..

I hadn't seen this before, thanks for the post. So much fun I started to make a page here. . Haven't had much chance to upload images yet, so there are only a few...

Me. Though, admittedly, I may not be too closely connected. What I like about Flickr is that you can have this "photo strip" on your blog to advertise your graphic work. Really cool.

Eszter, I agree with most of what you said. I should probably stop right there and apologise for any annoying remarks I've made so far.

But... there are some salient points to make, so I'll continue this, offlist.

dglp - That's fine, but the name of this particular park is Millennium Park. It's a proper name and as far as I know, it's pretty unusual to alter the spelling of those. (Sure, I answer to emails that refer to Esther and other variants, but I much prefer it if people spell my name correctly when addressing a message to me. I consider it a misspelling even if the name Esther does exist.)

Mine are here. Mostly screenshots from programs I've written; I've found the flickr's Notes feature to be a great way to annotate screenshots.

Mine are here.

Mine are all taken on black and white film, however, then scanned. Mostly Oxford/landscape type stuff.

Just some of them stuck in an individual album here

my flickr page is here.

i like discovering photos through groups and contacts more than thru the interestingness page, although i do like their clusters cause it shows me what kinda pictures other people are taking in the same areas that interest me.

(Enters, wearing Pedant's Cap)

The OED gives millenium and milennium as non-standard (i.e. acceptable) variants of millennium.

(Exits, still wearing cap)

OK. I'm "here":http://www.flickr.com/photos/seatrout. What would be interesting to know is whether the competitive element inseperable from a social site like Flickr makes us better photographers. I suspect that it does; at the same time it shows quite clearly the limits of ability. The few really outstanding photographers there stand out very clearly.
