Henry/Harry

by Henry on August 17, 2005

A point of occasional confusion for people linking to, or commenting on CT – “Henry Farrell” is not the same person as “Harry Brighouse” . When a post is by “Henry,” it’s written by me, and when it’s by “Harry,” it’s him. I’m not really complaining about this, as I get much the better end of the deal – while I get to author books on political theory without actually having to write them, he gets attacked for saying rude things about Robert Conquest that he didn’t in fact say. But still, perhaps better to keep things straight.

I was always confused about “Herry”, the biggest of the blue muppet monster on Sesame Street. Is “Herry” really a name, or was there some sort of big disagreement about whether to name him “Harry” or “Henry” (or, as I thought it was as a child, “Hairy”), and this was the unfortunate compromise?

Reminds me of how another philosopher solved this problem with a brief letter to the editor of The Times :

Dear Sir,

We wish to make it clear that neither one of us is the other.

Bertrand, Lord Russell
Russell, Earl of Liverpool

It’s depressingly formal, but you might solve the problem by simply changing your author tag-lines (by lines?) to your full names. “Harry Brighouse” and “Henry Farrell” are easier to distinguish on the fly than “Henry” and “Harry.”

er, sorry about that to both of you. At least I got my Jon/John problem right this time. Any chance of you all taking on catchy and easy-to-recall nick names?

There is great pride to be taken in insulting Robert Conquest.

Nice one Harry.

I blush to admit that I have made this mistake myself. Also, dsquared, you are a humorist on par with The Editors.

Which one of you is in Sandhurst then?

wait wait wait

You’re telling me that the posts written by “Henry”, are written by Henry? And the posts written by “Harry”, are written by Harry?

Who writes the ones written by “Fido”?

I’ve just realised that we can all play this game; the ones signed “Kieran” are written by me.

I am so tired of being mistaken for Jared Leto. Come on, people.

You’re telling me that the posts written by “Henry”, are written by Henry?

We all know that, but what about the ones written by Henry?

I do not know which one of us has written this post.
