Whoa, I didn’t realize that was in Strathmore either! I think having rock acts there must be pretty new—sure wasn’t the case when I lived in Montgomery County.

Thanks for the advice, everyone—I probably won’t make Sigur Ros, as we are projected to have a week-old baby on the day of the show, but I may try to see the Decemberists.

Jordan—Sigur Ros would be brilliant live. Unfortunately I’ve missed them because (along with Interpol, Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed, Low, Willy Mason, Jose Gonzalez, etc.) nobody bothered to tell me they were playing. Not this time though.

NPR has a webcast of the show, which I thought was excellent overall; the Strathmore was a perfect venue. Ammunition for the detractors: there were pretentious moments. For example, there was a prolonged period of silence in the middle of one of the songs, and on the webcast you should be able to hear people hissing at the fools who applauded prematurely. Although I’m having a hard time playing it myself, the link is:

J. Ellenberg: I’ve seen both the Decemberists and the New Pornographers put on excellent live shows. Of the two, I’d give a slight edge to the Decemberists. When I saw them last spring they had Petra Hayden along, providing violin and backing vocals. She stepped up to the mic to solo on a beautiful, heartfelt rendition of Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” that nearly moved me tears.
