He did have a nifty proto-Afro during his days with the New York Cosmos, though he still had the faintly grandfatherly thing he had, even at 17. Google gives a startling image of a groovin' Pele at Studio 54(!). Gol! Gol! Gol!

How right you are, Astrong. To me, all footballers look the same and all have mullets (except dishy Zizou). But since you've shown me the error of my ways, I've learnt a lot about mullets from wikipedia. Heartfelt thanks.

Pele might be accused of a few things, but having or having had a mullet isn't one of them, unless I've missed something big.

Speaking of fundamental flaws, The Economist is not a "newspaper", it just claims, against common sense, to be one. It's a magazine.

Welcome Matthew! you may remember me from the annual letter I send to the Economist pointing out that the Big Mac is not a standardised commodity and it differs in fat content, recipe and even weight between locations in order to suit local tastes. I realise that the Big Mac index is a fun thing and part of the brand and all that but I swear that this is an important and fundamental flaw. I am not a loony.
