The winter of 1957-8, when my parents moved from Ohio to Tucson, they also had a snowstorm. So I'm told, everybody in town freaked out, they'd never seen anything like it.

Any time you can get in your car in Tucson, elevation 3,600 feet, temperature 100° F plus from fifteen minutes after sun-up to fifteen minutes after sun-down, and drive for about an hour or so right up the side of a mountain to the top of Mt. Lemmon, 10,600 feet, and eight or nine months out of the year you're apt to see snow up there. What a relief it is after the all-day oven-like heat in town! Just don't get out of your car and start running around, because you're apt to pass rioght out from the thin air.

My family decided to move from Tucson to New England in January of 1978. The blizzard of '78 is my first memory of snow.

First significant snow-fall in Philadelphia last night, too- only about 1/2 inch and not as unusual, of course, as snow in Tuscon, but still some odd weather this year.

Yes, if someone could direct us to a picture, that would be great.
I heard that so far we've had the warmest winter in 100 years here in W-Europe. Right now the Sun is shining, it's warm, and the trees and plants think it's March or April. I hope it will start freezing sooner rather than later, otherwise we're going to have a mosquito-Summer!

So, as if we needed an excuse, here's Wallace Stevens on the subject:

As You Leave The Room

. . . I wonder, have I lived a skeleton's life,
As a disbeliever in reality,

A countryman of all the bones of the world?
Now, here, the snow I had forgotten becomes

Part of the major reality, part of
An appreciation of a reality

And thus an elevation, as if I left
With something I could touch, touch every way.

And yet nothing has been changed except what is
Unreal, as if nothing had been changed at all.

Sadly, the Christmas lights are long gone. But I'm sure people are uploading shots to flickr as we speak.

The kid has seen snow, but a long time ago. Very excited.
