You really know that the individual knew what he was talking about when he used this to rant about price controls never working. He did not seem to realize that the price of gold had been set by the Bank of England and the US government for decades at $27/oz and this was a fundamental reason the international financial system had worked so well in the era of great prosperity before WW I. What FDR was doing was raising the price of gold and that virtually every mainstream economic study of the Great Depression concluded that leaving the gold standard was what one of the most important reasons that the great 1929-33 economic collapse just happened to end the very same month that FDR took office--Bernanke is one of the depression scholars who believes this. His and other's work finds a very tight relationship between when countries deserted the gold standard and when the output plunge ended in that country.

I like Herbert Hoover, like him a lot. Too bad his system for setting gold price turned out to be a calamity. Bummer, Dude.

And anyone who's got "Q" the Enchanter vouching for him must be real, regardless of how odd his idea of "nightmarish" might be.

"communists or communist 'sympathizers'"

As if that were a distinction Cheney/Bush would understand. What was I thinking?

And norbizness, I've met him; he's real. And a nice chap in person. (Aren't we all.)

If Cheney/Bush had been in power 75 years ago, the policy option to be disposed of by lottery wouldn't have been the price of gold, but rather whether to imprison only all communists or communist "sympathizers" as well.
