I just watched The Verdict. Wow, it’s like Checkov microwaved on HIGH for 20 minutes. And that would’ve been OK - this is Hollywood after all – but it’s too bad most of Checkovian comedy got evaporated in the process.

I’ve never been a fan really, though the scene where he’s eating 50 eggs in Cool Hand Luke is great – he always seemed somehow too handsome, not blending in with the rest of the film, too much of a star, not enough of an actor.

As he got older this became less of a problem and I liked him quite a bit in Color of Money, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge and Road to Perdition. Going to watch The Verdict tomorrow, which seems to have been one of his best performances.

Blimey. Very sad, I agree. But I just came to this post, and the NYT obit, after reading the Telegraph one. I always thought obits (certainly the ones of really famous old people) were done in house. Apparently not.

I’ll still buy the salad dressing. It’s good, even if my real reason was that he gave the profits away.
