Worth bearing in mind that John Martyn didn't hire him to sing. He was and probably still is a superb drummer - listen to "No one receiving" on Before and after science if you get a chance.

yeah, but, i've never thought to myself, "that phil collins: what a bastard!"

i've just thought, "what a rubbishy song-writer and whiney voice".

and, you know, it's perfectly possible to be a nice bloke who can't sing or write songs for a damn. we all know plenty of them.

so: hurray for phil collins, that nice chap! what a rubbishy song-writer he is, and what a whiney voice he has! i'll be happy to have dinner with him, but i think i'll turn off the radio whenever he comes on!

When I saw Phil Collins guest starring on "Miami Vice", I had the same shock - "Gee, he seems like a funny, kind of goofy, likable guy". Ugh.

Like when I realized that, although he wasn't my cup of tea at all, Billy Joel is probably a good songwriter.

Mr. Martyn, OTH, was great in all ways, much underappreciated, and will be much missed.
