That’s not possible. Thanks to the Efficient Markets Hypothesis, stuff should appear just as you are about to run out of it.

Yes, and the closer you are to running out, the more it costs.

bob, text is small. The archives would take up very little disk space. As Kieran said, it's log files you have to watch out for; you don't want details of every person who visited your site, or runaway error messages or spam logs or whatnot to accumulate.

Just out of curiousity, how much space does a large active long-lived blog require? I presume you can compress the archives.

100 G? 2 T?

The main thing we ran out of was disk space --- the partition that the sql database lives (lived) in filled up (with other stuff, mainly a metastasized log file) and so the file system couldn't write anything. This created all kinds of other problems, as you can imagine.

The Darfur post has 40 or so comments. You may need to reload the page (or clear your browser cache) to see them, in case you have an outdated version. But they're there all right.

If you run KH's post through Translation Party you get: "I think we need to be successful. We ran out of different things. I blame society." Which is much clearer, I think.

A good memory is one trained to forget the trivial.
(Clifton Fadiman)

Or

The memory represents to us not what we choose but what it pleases.
(Michel Eyquem de Montaigne)

Or

Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things.
(Cicero)

Anyhow, welcome back. There exist insufficiently many pithy quotes about running out of memory. I blame society.

the details aren't hard to figure out.

society led to kieran's running out of bun money;
society caused holbo to run out of patience;
society made quiggin run out of the room screaming;
and because of society, bérubé ran out the clock.

it was a collective failure, sure, but it all had to do with running out, and it's all society's fault.

what, you want more detail than that?

Do you know if the Save Dafur post is having issues? I keep seeing that there are comments on it, but when I try to view it, I can't see any of them. This happens both at home and at work.
