bob, text is small. The archives would take up very little disk space. As Kieran said, it’s log files you have to watch out for; you don’t want details of every person who visited your site, or runaway error messages or spam logs or whatnot to accumulate.

Just out of curiousity, how much space does a large active long-lived blog require? I presume you can compress the archives.

The main thing we ran out of was disk space—- the partition that the sql database lives (lived) in filled up (with other stuff, mainly a metastasized log file) and so the file system couldn’t write anything. This created all kinds of other problems, as you can imagine.

The Darfur post has 40 or so comments. You may need to reload the page (or clear your browser cache) to see them, in case you have an outdated version. But they’re there all right.

it was a collective failure, sure, but it all had to do with running out, and it’s all society’s fault.
