Sunday photoblogging – Strasbourg: Ponts Couverts

by Chris Bertram on July 12, 2015

As we wait to see whether Europe can survive in its current form, I thought something from Alsace would be suitable.

Beautiful. What was the vantage point?

The Ponts Couverts complex is a curious combination of mediaeval and baroque water fortification. What Chris B’s photo shows is the mediaeval part; one of the towers doubled frugally as a city dungeon. The photo must have been taken from Vauban’s barrier further upstream, with sluice gates that could be lowered to flood the approaches. The Dutch built much more of the same sort of thing.

CB — The photo I’m linking below has nothing to do with the photo you’ve posted (which is great – really like the wide angle on that), but it’s a photo that I took last week and I’m linking it here because seeing and thinking about your photos in this series has made me a marginally better photographer (I think), and I don’t know that I would have taken the following photo without it. So, thank you.

These bridges, which are beautiful, don’t appear to be covered at all. Why are they called “ponts couverts”?

In regard to the text “As we wait to see whether Europe can survive in its current form,……..”

Hope you’re not holding your breath, what we’ve seen since Sunday is yet another exercise in kicking the Grexit can down the road. (Much) more to come !

Kind regards
