Why Do the Old Ladies Keep Turning Into Generals?

Posted by Belle Waring

Is it just me, or are the increasingly implausible encomiums of Rumsfeld coming out of the Bush administration starting to sound a little Manchurian Candidate-esque?

George Bush: Mr. Secretary, thank you for your hospitality, and thank you for your leadership. You are courageously leading our nation in the war against terror. You’re doing a superb job. You are a strong Secretary of Defense, and our nation owes you a debt of gratitude.

Dick Cheney
: As a former secretary of defense, I think Donald Rumsfeld is the best secretary of defense the United States has ever had.

Bennett Marco: Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life.

Maybe someone should ask the president if he’d like to pass the time by playing a little solitaire, just to see what happens.

Dang, Belle, now I’m stuck visualizing Barbara Bush and her beautiful mind being portrayed by Angela Lansbury and planting a passionate kiss on Georgie’s mouth. And that’s just the film version.

Hope and pray that the warmth and compassion spreads. Share it with all the peoples around the world. We must include the Iraqis. They must be going through some very difficult times at the moment. Let’s have more love and kindness between people who disagree on politics.

I am glad Bush is happy. I expect he’ll probably be quite happy to lose the next election too, he’s probably getting sick of the bad press.

Bush reminds me of Homer Simpson. Even though Kerry is not inspiring, the prospect of another 4 years of GWB is worrying, not because he is an unlovely man, but one wonders what other kind of mistakes he will make. Bush would probably be a fun guy to play a game of golf with, or go to a BBQ with, drink some duff beer with. I hope Bush could manage the key decisions for the next 4 years, but there is that nagging doubt that he may be out of his depth. (No offence intended).

Meryl Streep is playing the Angela Lansbury part in Jonathan Demme’s upcoming version—and, Dear Lord, she’s a creepy look-a-like (in the available trailer, at least) for Karen Hughes. Fucking sick shit; fucking sick.

There’s going to be a remake of the Manchurian Candidate?!
