Mankiw: Bush Economy not as bad as Worst Crisis in History of Capitalism

Posted by Kieran

Greg Mankiw’s Op-Ed made me feel much better, no matter what Brad DeLong thinks.

Give him four more years.

You’d think Mankiw would have one eye on the sales of his textbook before writing stuff like this. How can Econ professors assign his textbook when his op-eds pieces make one almost paralytic with laughter?

It’s a shame. His textbook is actually quite good. He was a very well respected economist. So much for that.

I couldn’t believe anyone would want to make this comparison, either. wow, better than the great depression? that’s some stewardship of the economy!

So is economics too mired in the muck of right-wing thought to do any good in the world?

Tom, Glenn Hubbard is now the dean of the Columbia University Business School. The system will reward people who play ball with it, at that level. Mankiw is clearly willing to pay the price; I doubt that the price is that high - how many economists will publicly denounce him, and refuse to work with him in the future? Probably several, and none who are critical to Mankiw’s future.
