Sunday photoblogging: blue tits

by Chris Bertram on October 29, 2023

I’ve not done much bird photography. It is actually pretty hard, since they move fast, change direction, disappear as soon as they see you, and are generally uncooperative subjects. But I’m resolved to do more and I’ve started to figure out some of the technical issues. There’s something serendipitous about this one, as I was actually concentrated on the bird to the left and didn’t realise that I had also captured its companion.

You’re right about the challenges of bird photography–and that happenchance has a lot to do with some of the best photos. This one is great!

Quite an amazing shot!

I know all too well the problems with bird photography. Way back in the day (before digital cameras) I burned through 72 frames trying to capture a tern diving into some wetland pools.

I finally gave up (ran out of film, actually) and called the series “Splash of a Bird” :-) To this day, it’s a shorthand in my family

“Oooh! Did you get that shot?”
“Naaaah, it’s just a splash”
