Tippelzone Utrecht

This picture is taken in the suburbs of Utrecht, which is one of the four ‘big’ Dutch cities (big by Dutch standards, of course). I’m not going to translate this – that would spoil the fun of guessing!

I can’t speak for the rest of the commenters, but personally, I wouldn’t tippel anywhere but in an approved zone. Wouldn’t want things getting out of hand when you’re tippelling. I’m glad you folks over there in Holland have signage to guide people in keeping their tippelage within the right zones. Very thoughtful, very thorough.

Well, I live in Utrecht,… but I never go there!

It’s yet another example of the intrusion of the State into private affairs. In a truly free society, people would tippel wherever they chose. To restrict tippeling to certain zones is to stigmatize an activity that has an ancient history, and one that has often provided opportunities that would not otherwise have been available. I say, free the tippelers!

I will not let life or death stand in the way of this sublime and funky tippeling over to the right that I crave!

(Sorry. It was bound to happen anyway, so I thought I’d help get it over with.)

Let’s see, the “Tippeliga” is the top league, so the “Tippelzone” must be, you know, kids, the zone that’s like the toppermost of the poppermost!

There is one and only one Tippelz, and it’s over here.

well, “Tippel” is presumably cognate with the English “tipple”, and thus is a place where one can go for an innocent glass of champagne or hock in civilised like-minded company. Or at least that will be my excuse if I’m ever caught in a bar there.

I think many customers would only be *so* pleased if there was a bar. No bars – only pedestrians and cars. Then, I’ve never done any fieldwork there, I admit, so I may be wrong.
An alternative title for this picture could have been “the government will always take good care of you – whatever your needs.”

Why guess when you have Wikipedia and Google translate…? How Dutch, to make even the sordid seem dull and safe…

There was me, innocently, thinking it was a sign to the local rubbish tip.

Insert traffic light pun here, I guess.

Hmmm . . . wonder if Igertay Oodsay has been there.

Whoops! that’s Oodsway.
