Perhaps it’s worth pointing out that it took me, like, 1.5 minutes to find approximately 1.5 gigs of free downloads of SXSW related mp3s. Hardly scratched the surface, I have. Lots of new bands, great stuff, live stuff, lots of mediocre stuff. Amazon has free samplers (here and here and here). Or check here. So far I’ve discovered that I like The Rural Alberta Advantage. Also, the Amazon ‘don’t mess with Texas’ sampler is strong. And Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers are great, but I didn’t learn that by getting them for free. Belle bought the album. They are at SXSW, I gather.
Tell me of your SXSW-related musical discoveries, for better or worse. But especially for better.

I downloaded the big free torrent once, several years ago. There was a lot of garbage there, of course, but now that my iPod is big enough to hold the whole thing, I’m still finding the occasional interesting song out of that batch while I drive to work. It’s a bit intimidating to consider doing it again, though…

Anyway, from that old batch, I quite liked Be Your Own Pet, The Meat Purveyors, and the Be Good Tanyas.

Not available as individual mp3s, but a good showcase from Jon Bernhardt of MIT’s station is downloadable as a podcast.

It can’t be much good – a search on “Joe Pug” gave no results.

I only ended up listening and rating about 75 of last year’s songs. Someone invent a plugin that will scrape the ratings for each band and sort these for me!

I have not followed SXSW but, of the bands linked at IRC, I know, and really like, The Dodos, Fang Island and Okkervil River.
