These aren’t mixed metaphors — if anything, they’re amusingly unmixed. I do wonder whether the humor is intentional, though.

I liked this one:
“Only in the combustible atmosphere Bush has fostered could Gibson’s grand guignol version of an anti-Semitic medieval passion play, The Passion of the Christ, become the number one box-office hit.”
I reread Orwell’s essay and liked as much as I did 10 years ago, but there was no mention of a fascist octopus. Where does that phrase come from?
