A Socialist for the Senate?

by Henry Farrell on April 20, 2005

David Sirota tells us that Bernie Sanders is on the verge of announcing his candidacy for Jim Jeffords’ Senate seat (Jeffords is retiring). This could be fun. (via Atrios)

Actually, I think he stopped calling himself ‘socialist’ a while ago. I think he now calls himself ‘independent’. Because, you know, socialists are really the same as communists – evil people. They uphold Marxist, Leninist, satanic principles drawn from foreign law.

As of a year ago February (the linked article) he was still a ‘democratic socialist’. One only hopes he’s grooming a protege to run for his House seat.

His chances are pretty good, considering the Vermont House seat is an “at large” seat (i.e. he’s the only representative for the state), so the same electorate who have voted for him for Congress for 8 terms would vote for him for the Senate.

I’m calling it now: If Bernie goes to the Senate, it will mark the end of the gun control movement in America.
