This will hopefully be less contentious than my two previous posts, unless someone loathes and abominates Sure Sure for some reason. But why would they, Sure Sure is great! I listened to this song on repeat on a four mile walk today up hill and down dale in lovely West Virginia.
Vampire Weekend, still having it all going on! Actual video as well. (You should read the lyrics because they are a little bit incomprehensible.)

Been listening a lot to Dodie Clark and Orla Gartland, Dodie a Londoner and Gartland a Dubliner. Genres all over the place, from confessional Joni-Mitchell stuff to dance pop to hard rock. Fun videos. The kids are alright.

I can listen to Jake Lizzio from Signals Music Studio talking about music theory all day long. In fact that’s pretty much what I do do all day long.

and not even so much the music – but listening to ”a black man on a horse” saying:
”when you see a black man on a horse wing that fast you just gotta let em fly”
AND at the end:

Late at night when I should be asleep: Azure State cover of Tangerine Dream’s “Love on a Real Train.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRSNy8DcIDk
I also recommend the work of Flemish composer Wim Mertens. He is often characterized as a minimalist but his work is much richer than that term implies. Love his “Struggle for Pleasure” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO2LDx8Iagc

This week, I have been putting over and over the best songs of the official prodigies of French rap. Try these four songs, even if you don’t speak French (the clips themselves are great). Head and shoulders above whatever misogynistic gangsta tripe commercial rap mass produces.

Here’s some filler text, maybe needed to avoid a comment with only URLs getting filtered out. I assume case/lang/veirs are not controversial.

I’m years behind the curve. That’s why I only discovered this great Scissor Sisters song this year. Somehow I listened to their first album over and over and then forgot them later.

Instead of listening to a song more than three times in a row, I like to listen, in a row, to several different artists doing the same song, to see how they each bring out something different and interesting wrt that one song. Here’s a song I’m obsessed with this week: “Correnteza”, one of Tom Jobim’s lesser known beauties. The whole world neglects it, but Brazilian artists seem to like it, and so do the fans.
Here’s Jobim’s original:

Brazilian guitarist Lisa Ono, with vocal by Miucha, who is, I think, Chico Buarque’s sister:

Paula Morelenbaum, who, I think, is Jobim’s daughter:

Vanessa da Mata:

The co-writer of the song, legendary Brazilian guitarist Luiz Bonfa:

Djavan:

This trio has a nice arrangement:

The only American I know of who has done this song is jazz singer Karrin Allison. But finally, here is Miucha with a live version with a cool sonic structure. (That’s Maria Bethania enjoying the performance there.)

I’m afraid for a few things I listen to multiple covers multiple times, for example: the Bowie original, Peter Gabriel, Motorhead, King Crimson (Fripp as on the original), Janelle Monae.
