Squid and Owl

by John Holbo on April 13, 2009

When a man gets to be around 40 – maybe a bit older – he starts to look back on life and wonder: what thing have I done for which I will be remembered? The next thing he does is start a webcomic. Maybe sell a few t-shirts, other Cafe Press-type stuff. Which brings us to:

Smallsquidowllogo

No, really. I honestly don’t know whether it’s a comic or not. It’s an illustrated childrens book for adults, maybe. I’m planning to serialize it on Flickr. Here’s the set. Subscribe to the RSS feed! I decided to start things out by posting the first 21 pages. I’ll be adding a page a day, weekdays. (Not like there’s a story or anything, but it rhymes.)

Then it will become wildly popular. (Step 3: Profit!) Maybe I’ll be able to find a publisher, eh?

The only other really good idea I’ve had lately is … Bob, can we just show them the picture?
Highwaist

That’s right. High-waisted utility belts. People think they make you look like you’re wearing ‘old man pants’. But no one ever told Edward G. Robinson he looked like an old man, just because his pants came up to his armpits, and his tie was only 2 inches long. He looked good that way. It suited his body type. If he’d played Batman, he would have had a high-waisted utility belt and the teeniest little chest emblem bat you ever saw. And very natty it would have been. I’m convinced. (I’ve been watching this [amazon], in case you are curious.)

Love Squid ‘n’ Owl, but your amazon link is broken.

Love the illustration style. Probably page 12 is my favorite so far. Reminds me of illustration for children from the 1950’s and 1960’s with a healthy dash of the Voynich manuscript’s ambiguity/mystery.

Dude. This is the best thing I’ve seen on the internet in at least two months.

When a man gets to be around 40 – maybe a bit older – he starts to look back on life and wonder: what thing have I done for which I will be remembered?

And when he gets a little older than that, he thinks…..what was my name again?

Just a suggestion:

On such subatomic ground, where can unity be found?

Otherwise: continue!, but for the ‘make money’ part – that’s all so tiresome and already done.

Ponies!

Thanks for the high praise, onymous. 2 months on the internet – that’s a long time, in human years.

Yes, I meant it as high praise. But, despite how it feels like ages, I think it might not have been two months since I saw Kutiman mixes YouTube, which gives you a run for your money.
