Kirstjen Nielsen has resigned from her position as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. While there, she was responsible for overseeing some of the most egregious policies, including caging children and separating them from their parents, a policy which she appears to have lied about. Perhaps there are real extenuating circumstances that will emerge, or perhaps she will publicly repent for what she was involved in. Both seem unlikely.
Jesse Eisinger at ProPublica thinks that Nielsen might quickly find a berth at a think-tank, university center or similar institution.

Where Neilsen lands will be a big test of DC elite circles. I expect her to pay zero professional cost for ripping children from their parents, embracing hate & racism, and habitually lying.
— Jesse Eisinger (@eisingerj) April 7, 2019

Different people have different limits. Nielsen is some distance beyond mine. If she gets a position at a think-tank, university center or similar, I will not participate on any panel that involves anyone from that think-tank, center or other institution. I will not participate in any event where the institution plays an organizing role, nor will I associate myself in any way that might reasonably be seen as providing active support for that institution. If you feel similarly, I invite you to sign your name below (it may take some time for your signature to get past our commenting system) or, if you have a bigger or different platform, to take this idea and roll it out yourself.
[I should note: this is not a collective post by Crooked Timber, although I would guess that many/most/perhaps all others here will agree].

Rich @14 After years of blogging, the world-weary tone and absolute silliness of this comment are depressingly familiar.
Could you spell out what kind of person you have in mind, who would be in a position to receive invitations from thinktanks and similar institutions, and at the same time be in such straits that turning down these invitations would threaten them with destitution?
Gareth Wilson 04.08.19 at 9:15 am
Her actual behaviour aside, does just being a member of the Cabinet for 16 months give you any particular insight worth hiring to a think tank or university center? David Petraeus getting all those non-military academic posts was bad enough.

People in positions of significant power with respect to policy making or policy advocacy should be accountable for what they do with that power. In this imperfect world, I’ll do my small part by choosing not to associate with those who use their power for appallingly inhumane and criminal purposes.

People who are working in the brain of the beast will find that there is a lot of evil around to refuse to cooperate with, if they look. It will not be far away. And no one should imagine that serious, effective non-cooperation will be without economic or political consequences. Hence one must consider what one can do, what one can get away with, which depends in part on one’s position on the political food chain. The tenured professor may be able to boycott; maybe the janitor cannot. There may be other things one can do — subversion, sabotage, exposure come easily to mind. Or if one is not able to go to the front, support those who can.

I think that in most cases it’s more a matter or networking to more powerful people, and laundering bribes. She’s just a tool, and her only qualification was being totally devoid of humanity.
However, the powers that be know that rewarding such people keeps the pipeline stocked with other such people, for future hiring.

A question: what if it were one’s own institution–more specifically, must it be, say, the specific ‘university center’, and not the larger, encompassing institution? And were she (somehow) offered, instead, (some kind of) a faculty position, would the refusal cover only the offending department?
Thanks,

I agree to this, and will sign with my public name and affiliation, but wish to pose this question here with relative anonymity.
What about other figures who have been given financial and institutional support, whose work has provided some of the so-called “intellectual underpinnings” of the many of the assumptions upon which people like Nielsen operate?
I am thinking here of Charles Murray, whose book “The Bell Curve” has been, arguably, as profoundly damaging with respect to policy prescriptions, as the labor of those implementing such policies.
I would argue that, following the logic here with regards to Nielsen (with which I agree), then a similar boycott of AEI is definitely in order.
Thoughts?

While Kirstjen Nielsen is certainly guilty of crimes against humanity, let us not forget that Trump’s head of the CIA Gina Haspell admitted to actively participating in torture, yet was still confirmed by our craven congress.
John Yoo, who authored the infamous torture memo under W’s administration, is currently in his old job as a tenured professor at UC Berkeley.
The list goes on, but my point is this: even if somehow Nielsen is imprisoned for life, there is still a lot of others we need to take out.

@148 Kevin Cope – Wikipedia tells me Ms Nielesen received her graduate degree, a law degree from UVa in 1999. You have to wonder if there were red flags then. We can’t have a meaningful reckoning until the institutions that send these people out into the world understand their own responsibility to inculcate how reprehensible this behavior is.

World weary tone? You discerned that from a single sentence?
What kind of person, you ask? A person with much to risk. Once a widely respected, both politically and professionally, physician. A commissioned officer promoted ahead of his peers at or near the top of his game.
Perhaps you also took a stand while in uniform against torture and an unjust war near its inception over 15 years ago. I don’t know, but you blogged, you say, over that same period.
However, the cost has been an externally imposed social isolation, professional and familial. Where once the invitations to teach, lecture , write and man-up as director or department head arrived with some frequency, for the last decade on there have been no such solicitations. Time passes rapidly reading blogs in between a few rejection letters from entry-level positions. With all those mounting disappointments there have also been a few threats of violence as asinine, insightful and pathetic as your analysis
So, I do not sincerely recommend anyone risking life, limb or career in an effort to ostracize Ms. Nielsen from the body politic. I just think it’s as accurate to surmise that no one responding in the affirmative here is looking to risk anything for the isolation of Kirstjen’s sorry ass.

I do not feel that we should make it easy for Kirstjen Nielson to get a cushy new job. Anyone that would actually implement Trump’s zero tolerance policy could and probably will do anything to project herself upward in her new job. Any decent person would have quit their job when asked to separate children from their families and put innocent children in prisons with no contact with their parents. To make it even worse, they did not even bother to keep records of which child belonged to what family, leaving the child, possibly, to be separated for the rest of their lives.
I do not feel she deserves a second chance just because she had finally had enough of the horrible things that the President was requesting her to do. I believe that she has no regreat but in the end was more afraid of going to prison by breaking the law and she decided to resign then.
