Visiting Cornell

by Eszter Hargittai on April 11, 2006

I’m on my way to Cornell to give a talk in the Information Science Colloquium tomorrow. There are several great people at Cornell across numerous departments studying IT-related topics so this should be a fun trip.

It’s been almost 15 years since I’ve been to Ithaca. That first visit was for the Cornell Summer College Program for high school students. I still have very fond memories of it and one of my closest friends to this day is someone I met that summer in 1991. Unfortunately, the program no longer offers full scholarships for international students. Bummer.

As a side note, I would like to recommend the Cornell campus-to-campus shuttle from NYC. It’s not only comfortable, it has wifi. I’ve never blogged from a bus before, it’s a nice option to have.

I would have used that campus-to-campus shuttle to see Gordon Atkinson at Cornell a few days ago. Unfortunately, the folks who devise the shuttle schedule are under the impression that no one ever visits Cornell from NYC for the weekend — just vice versa.

We could very well have crossed paths in ’91. But not this year…

If there’s a spring thaw, make sure you get over to the Fall Creek Bridge to watch the spray. It’s a short walk from central campus, and every bit as inspiring as the bigger displays at Taughannock Falls.

Or since Eszter will be in Collegetown, she’ll be closer to Cascadilla Creek. (Rhymes with Padilla.) When I think back to the old days, those good old days on the hill, I like to get out my A.R. Ammons.

Eszter, you have no doubt now discovered that Ithaca is not nearly as nice in April as it is in the summer.

I’ve been enjoying my visit lots. Thanks for the recommendations. I did a bit of walking around today and since the weather was nice (until the rain in the evening) it’s been very pleasant to be outside. The place is beautiful, more so than what I remembered.

Etat – Were you in the summer college program as well??

April==rain in Ithaca. Actually, every month == rain in Ithaca, in greater or less quantities. Campus noted for green grass and for raining buckets every Friday in the summer. Snow and deer running across your lawn in the winter.

(I should know–I grew up there!)

Eszter – I don’t recall exactly. I think that I was on campus during the summer of 1991, but not enrolled until Autumn. Or maybe that was 1990.
