I Don’t Believe In The Sun

by John Holbo on February 7, 2012

I’m teaching Plato – again! But I like it that way! Also, I don’t see why Belle should be the only one posting YouTube videos. So here’s a really really nice Magnetic Fields song, allowing me to combine my interest in Platonic themes with my interest in linking to YouTube.

I STOMPEDD ON YR POST! SORRY. It is a good song, though.

O how I envy everyone hearing this song for the first time.

Playing it anyway.

Stephin Merritt hasn’t done many songs that are quite this good – which is OK, as neither has anyone else in the world – but a Youtube search for the Magnetic Fields is very rewarding, not to mention day-swallowing. I particularly recommend “The death of Ferdinand de Saussure”…

I said, it’s all well and kosher
To say you don’t understand
But this is for Holland-Dozier-

I was actually thinking last week about how I used to listen to a particular Magnetic Fields song when I was a bit miserable, but couldn’t remember what it was. And this is it! Thanks!

The Magnetic Fields are fantastic live. Go to a show. You’ll be glad you did.

Also, buy the 2 albums he made under the band name “the 6ths.” Or all of them for that matter.

John, if, by chance, you are ignorant of Orson Welles narrating an animation of the allegory of the cave, I hereby bring it to your attention, because it seems like your kind of thing.

Confirmed #4 that they are indeed a fantastic live act. Merritt has some kind of hearing issue where he’s really sensitive to loud noises (they actually ask people not to clap, or to clap softly between songs) so the acoustics are always impeccable and distortion-free.
