Tell it to Judge

by Kieran Healy on September 24, 2005

I was trying to think of ways to legitimately work this photograph of Judge into a post, but there aren’t any, really. So here he is anyway, to remind us all of the virtues of carefully weighing your options and making wise choices. Suffice to say that Judge would not approve of torturing prisoners, invading other countries with a minimum of long-term planning, selling stock in insider deals, laggardly hanging about when people need urgent help, or crossing the road without first looking for a safe place and then letting all the traffic pass you. Pay attention to Judge. He knows whereof he speaks. Normal programming will resume shortly.

These days, he isn’t too hot on “fraud, spoof ‘phishing’ emails, keylogging attacks and computer viruses”:http://pages.ebay.ie/judge/ either.

Judge works for eBay these days? Crikey. How times have changed.

Judge may not approve of torturing prisoners, invading other countries with a minimum of long term planning, insider dealing etc, but is ultimately limited by the statutes Judge is there to interpret. All fine and dandy.
In the UK there still appears to be at least some separation of judiciary and legislature, such that an obviously ludicrous law such as the internment without trial can be overthrown. However when you have a holier-than-thou such as Blair assuming that everything can be solved by throwing more barely thought-out knee-jerk statutes into the pot rather than seeing how existing ones can be utilised it might cause a problem. Namely confusion, more extended court cases wasting time and money and more challenges going all the way to the Law Lords.
Honestly, a law against glorifying terrorism, how can that be framed in a way that stops the real nutters whilst avoiding Mrs Miggins being arrested as she thinks Ireland should be a single nation. A terrorist in legal terms is largely defined by the system he or she opposes. Judges (and the legal system in the UK generally) are actually quite progressive and liberal, but still can only work within the confines of statutes. We can only hope that the more ridiculous excretions of parliament are thrown out with reference to previous precedent or the human rights act.

Two reactions:

1. What is this — Fafblog?
2. Where’s the Witch?

Where’s the Witch?

Are you are thinking of the far inferior _Fortycoats_?

Hmmm. I thought I remembered an episode of WW where a witch makes Judge disappear. But my 1970s TV viewing is a haze of episodes of Hawaii Five-O, Wanderly Wagon, and news of stuff being blown up in Northern Ireland, all on a dodgy B&W TV.

I only remember the opening credits of Hawaii Five-O, because that’s when we were sent to bed.

That made more sense than our bed time, half-way through — no resolution, no “book him, danno.”

I was occasionally allowed up to see the end – in fact the only bit of the programme that I can remember is the theme music and the blokes rowing as the closing credits came up.

At this point I feel compelled to mention the song Aloha Steve and Danno by Radio Birdman.

…not approve of…invading other countries with a minimum of long-term planning…

Beam me up Scotty, there’s no intelligent life here.

“Steve, I want to thank you / For all you’ve done for me.” Woof. That’s going to be in my head for a while.

You are wise to want to return to your homeworld, abb1, where the counterpart to the Iraq war was well-planned and well-executed. I’m sure it’s a much pleasanter place than the one the rest of us live in.

Um, no, actually, in my homeworld invading other countries is frowned upon regardless of quality of the pre-invasion planning.

Oh, ok. That’s much better.

I’m curious as to how perplexed non-Irish readers of this blog must be after this post.

I’ll enlighten you; Judge kinda creeps me out.

So would Judge be in favor of well-planned invasions? And how does insider trading compare at all with torturing people and crossing the road before looking?

“I’m curious as to how perplexed non-Irish readers of this blog must be after this post.”

Highly. However, I can say that I rarely watched Hawaii Five-O, being much more interested in the far more sociologically signficant Star Trek, Love Boat, and Jeffersons.

Indubitably.

Does no-one remember watching Skippy and Flipper as they ate their Friday fish…? Or is just that I’m from a slightly younger generation?

p.s. Bosco was the bong.
