Internet legend Gary Farber is going through a really rough patch right now and needs lots of medicine he can’t afford to buy. If any of you fine CT readers could kick him a few bucks that would be great. Gary tends to run hot and cold, but when he’s fired up about a topic he’s a prodigious blogger. Also, he can be kind of a prickly fellow, as he would be the first to admit, so don’t let the fact that he pwn3d you with unnecessary harshness one time in a comments thread hold you back. (Remember that time, when you said something interesting, and then Gary said he’d already blogged about it like two months ago? Yeah, that time.) You know what they say: charity begins at blog.

Boy, you really know how to inspire charity.

Before anyone else says it: I just about busted a gut laughing at this.
Belle: she’s the best.
I don’t expect a penny, but I’m joyed to read this.
Okay, a couple of pennies would be nice. But, still: busted a gut laughing.

If you read Gary regularly (which you should), you might also think about signing up via PayPal to send him $5 or $10 a month automatically. I’m doing somesuch ridiculously small sum (being perpetually overdrawn myself), but if his regular readers all did that, he’d be in better shape.

while this wouldn’t help gary in the short term, I really think you people in the US need to start a revolution or something – I mean, how can this be, in one of the richest countries in the world?
kid bitzer 10.21.06 at 11:52 am
yeah, well, since I’m no fan of revolutions, I’m thinking about the short term.
And in the short term what I did is: went to Gary’s site. Clicked on Pay-Pal. Sent the dude some cash.
Not a lot, cause I don’t have a lot. About the same amount you have, that you were going to waste on some not very valuable stuff. Spend it on quality blogging instead.
The guy provides a valuable service. I did the same thing for Glenn Greenwald the other day.
And you know? It just may be that the revolution that is most needed right now is the one that displaces the entrenched media outlets, who are pretty much Republican megaphones, and replaces them with knowledgeable experts who write about what is actually going on.
So give some money to Gary,*and* support a revolution. It’s two birds with one stone.

Apparently, inability to afford healthcare is character-building or something. Must be why Congress displays such a lack of character.

“Also, he can be kind of a prickly fellow, as he would be the first to admit….”
Thinking about this, it would appear I’d have to be the second to admit it.
Wait, that’s the sort of thing you were talking about, right? (I used to drive my fourth-grade teacher crazy with this correcting stuff.)
Incidentally, yeah, the “subscribe” option, at only $5/month (but, hey, be the first person to do it more than once), is a great thing for me, since it means I can count on that amount coming in in the long term, and there are a lot of ways that’s far more valuable than the sheer amount.

It would be very petty of me to mention that no one has actually made a contribution in over 18 hours….

I’m in for $5 a month.

I made three [four] attempts using two different credit cards and what I thought was a functional PayPal account and was rejected every time. The two new radiometers on my kitchen window’s shelf remind me that my credit’s good.
Out of the dozens of spam messages warning of problems with my PayPal account, one was not flagged as spam. Perhaps I should not have ignored it.

could I just point out that there are other advantages to supporting media that is not owned by corporations?
The press always writes at the beck and call of its sponsors. We know that. When the press is supported by big money, it writes the stories they want.
Conversely, you can buy Gary’s allegiance for relatively little. Since sending him my widow’s mite, his coverage of Bitzer-related news has soared.
He has written about the plight of persecuted Bitzers; advocated for an independent Bitzeria; done three human-interest stories on adorable baby Bitzers and Bitzer kitzens, and in general has been the best megaphone for our cause that money can buy.
I’m telling you: you just can’t get better press coverage for your dollar! I mean–Armstrong Williams wanted hundreds of thousands. Gary can channel the whole power of the Amygdala media empire for a fraction of that cost.
Send him some dough.
If Paypal don’t work, send him a check. And a press release.

OK, done, but meanwhile when are you guys going to get a health care system? I ask as one who would certainly be dead if I were American, but, being European, can contribute generously to the exchequer.

How should we know? I thought it would be when our corporations realized that a national health care system would be in their interest as well as in the interest of their employees, but they should have realized that a few years ago.
Because of our system by which candidates can’t run for national office without receiving enormous bribes in order to pay for advertising time, our congressmen are unable to unite on anything that hasn’t been suggested to them by the corporations.
I ask as one who would certainly be dead if I were American, but, being European, can contribute generously to the exchequer.
You probably wouldn’t be dead, you would just be bankrupt and in horrible debt for the rest of your life. Or in constant pain.
Anderson 10.22.06 at 8:14 pm
in horrible debt for the rest of your life.
Of course, you can also achieve this simply by attending college and grad school.

Sure, but that is also a sort of illness.
