Noted in passing. Russell Jacoby, Marxist cultural critic and bane of the lit-studies left, claims on his faculty webpage to be a member of the “American Pessimist Society.” Where do you sign up?

That is an amusing ambiguity. Pessimistic about America? Pessimists who are American? Both?

Actually, I think it’s a virtual organization and just asking where to sign up automatically makes you a member in good standing.

I always thought it would be good to join the Australian Mammal Society, but the membership is confined to biologists who, by my estimate, make up less than 0.001 per cent of Australian mammals.
