Colorful push and pull

by Eszter Hargittai on September 8, 2005

It’s been a while since I posted one of these. Of course now that I have several immediate deadlines these things find their way to me again.

Time Sink!

Not too easy, not too hard.

If you get stuck on Level 3 then try the hint here.

The hosting site has links to dozens of other games. I won’t even go there though (not now anyway). I really do have to get a lot done in the next few days especially since I just found out that I have to be orientating our incoming grad students on Monday.

I had no trouble with level three, but level five really stumped me.

Eszter 09.08.05 at 5:48 pm

I’m stuck on level 22. Another one was really hard a few levels back, but eventually I realized that you could reset the level and then it was much easier. I’m doing the various levels as little breaks from writing, but that only works if I don’t get stumped like in this case. I may have to give up as in the end the paper I am working on really does take precedence. Maybe I’ll come back to it tomorrow.

5 was OK, 11 was tough, and I’m stuck on 13 at the moment.

If you want a hint, just ask here.

Level 25 now, and time for a break.

Where do you find these time sinks Eszter?

Eszter 09.08.05 at 6:28 pm

I restarted level 22 and then got through it fine. Now I’m stuck on 23. (You must be wondering about the quality of writing I’m getting done in between.:)

KMason – Good question, I should’ve acknowledged the source in the post. Let me see if I can backtrack my movements earlier today and find it. [..] I found it at DownloadSquad, which merits its own Time Sink label.

Were you asking, because you think my browsing habits are nuts (legit thought) or because you just want to learn how to find time wasters on your own?:)

J. Otto Pohl 09.08.05 at 6:42 pm

I got through number five now. Eleven seems impossible, however.

kmason 09.08.05 at 6:45 pm

A little of both. My dissertation is due in 8 days (and 20 minutes), so I’m frantically looking for other things to be doing.

I’m sure your writing is fine, as you need both “on” and “off” time to write well (at least I do). I find these sorts of things as good little rewards for doing a chunk of work. The problem is in trying to hold myself to only doing 1 (or 2) levels per break.

I think 23 was a hard one (is that the 4 red blocks?).

kmason 09.08.05 at 7:03 pm

30 levels, and done. That justifies an actual, non-internet break for me.

Eszter 09.08.05 at 7:42 pm

Congrats! So you’re taking a break from the break?:)

I’m stuck on 26 (three red vertical dots in the middle) and will probably have to leave it at that for today. No, I don’t think 23 was the one with three dots, several diamond shaped ones have posed a challenge (if I remember correctly).

Got to 11 no problems. Now, stuck!

Eszter 09.08.05 at 9:33 pm

KMason – I had meant to say: good luck with the dissertation!

Luci – I went throught 11 pretty quickly, but now that I look at it I’m no longer sure how I did it.:(

Chris W. 09.08.05 at 9:50 pm

No problem with three, but level eleven took me a while and I’m stuck at thirteen now. Damn you, Eszter…

Eszter 09.08.05 at 10:01 pm

Let me know if you continue having trouble with 13, I do remember how to do that, in about 24 steps.

Chris W. 09.08.05 at 11:49 pm

Thanks, but I cracked it, and then got stuck at 18 and 22 again. Now all done. (But I’m not systematic enough to count steps.)

Eszter 09.09.05 at 12:23 am

Chris, I wasn’t counting steps. I went back and redid it.:) (You can find the passwords to the different levels on various sites so it’s possible to go back and try them again.)

rilkefan 09.09.05 at 12:40 am

Thank god there is a finite number of levels.

KMason 09.09.05 at 1:24 pm

Your well-wishing is much appreciated. It’s hard to imagine not having this lodestone around my neck, and I’m just hoping my advisor is happy enough to sign.

bill 09.09.05 at 6:03 pm

Whew! 30 was pretty! (What! Whaddya mean it’s a test of how well you prioritize time?)

Eszter 09.10.05 at 11:23 am

Two days later I finally figured out level 26. The rest wasn’t that hard. Finally! By the way, I don’t think the levels are by difficulty at all.
