Sigur Ros

by Henry Farrell on September 11, 2005

Any DC-area CT-readers who want to go to the Sigur Ros concert at the “Strathmore”:http://www.strathmore.org/ today? I have a spare ticket which I’m giving to the first person to ask for it in comments (I’ll be around the show at 6.45pm or so to do the handover).

What? No takers?

Come on you people! Up with Godspeed and Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Ros is the shizzle.

Airfare to D.C. included? Will fly in to BWI and take MARC if necessary.

When I saw 2 comments, I thought it would be, “I’ll take them,” followed by “Crap, someone got here first!”

It never occurred to me that the DC-area readers of Crooked Timber were completely lame (or, perhaps paradoxically, it never occurred to me that they would all have other plans today).

Sigur Ros comes to Madison in two weeks. Is it worth $25 if I’m unfamiliar with their music, but like Spacemen 3? Other upcoming shows include Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Decemberists, New Pornographers, Wolf Eyes, and LCD Soundsystem, and I want to be somewhat selective — so which of these should I go to?

(sorry for the semi-derail)

Sigur Ros and Decembrists.

(full disclosure: I can’t remember what Spaceman 3 sounds like)

I love the New Pornographers, but I’ve never seen good live show.

Sigur Ros are a little less druggy than Spacemen 3 (query: is it possible to be _more_ druggy than Spacemen 3???).

Looks like I’ll just be going to the show and seeing if I can sell the ticket at the door. Anyone who suddenly decides to go should email me at henry_deletethistext_@henryfarrell.net – I’ll check my mail again when I get to the venue.

J. Ellenberg: I’ve seen both the Decemberists and the New Pornographers put on excellent live shows. Of the two, I’d give a slight edge to the Decemberists. When I saw them last spring they had Petra Hayden along, providing violin and backing vocals. She stepped up to the mic to solo on a beautiful, heartfelt rendition of Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” that nearly moved me tears.

I’m a d.c area CT reader, and an indie rock fan, but I just can’t get into that airy, Scandinavian, made-up language shit. Sorry. If you get any tickets to Xiu Xiu, though, I’m there like a motherfucking bear.

I can’t believe that in three hours, a blog with this readership wasn’t able to generate a request for a Sigur Ros ticket! Especially when you get to meet a blogging superstar at the same time! Too bad I’m not in DC…

I’d gladly have taken that ticket, but I had other plans tonight and couldn’t go.

Incidentally, I read the following…

Sigur Ros are a little less druggy than Spacemen 3

…without having heard of Spacemen 3. I asked myself “Sigur Ros is LESS druggy than someone?” And scratched my head.

Son of a bitch, the one freaking day I don’t get on the Internet, and I miss free tickets to Sigur Ros. My stomach literally fell when I read this message. Hope the concert was good. Going to see the Decemberists later on this month?

My stomach literally fell

So missing the concert is the least of your worries, then? :-)

NPR has a webcast of the show, which I thought was excellent overall; the Strathmore was a perfect venue. Ammunition for the detractors: there were pretentious moments. For example, there was a prolonged period of silence in the middle of one of the songs, and on the webcast you should be able to hear people hissing at the fools who applauded prematurely. Although I’m having a hard time playing it myself, the link is:

To give you an idea of where Spaceman 3 is coming from: One of their albums is entitled Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs to.

Jordan — Sigur Ros would be brilliant live. Unfortunately I’ve missed them because (along with Interpol, Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed, Low, Willy Mason, Jose Gonzalez, etc.) nobody bothered to tell me they were playing. Not this time though.

Oh, damnit to hell, nothing good comes of taking a day off the Internets. Not the biggest fan of Sigur Ros, but Explosions is a fave. Damn, damn.

Strathmore! That’s two blocks from my parents’ house. They get semi-cool acts there? Who knew?

18

J. Ellenberg 09.12.05 at 2:08 pm

Whoa, I didn’t realize that was in Strathmore either! I think having rock acts there must be pretty new — sure wasn’t the case when I lived in Montgomery County.

Thanks for the advice, everyone — I probably won’t make Sigur Ros, as we are projected to have a week-old baby on the day of the show, but I may try to see the Decemberists.

query: is it possible to be more druggy than Spacemen 3???

You have to try hard but it can be done. My candidate: Royal Trux “Twin Infinitives” which is basically a 70 minute heroin implosion.
