Hilzoy has some “word by word analysis”:http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_09/014585.php of John McCain’s convention speech, which reminded me that I hadn’t seen anyone do any convention speech Wordles. Which doesn’t mean that no-one has done one – just that they don’t seem to be popping up in the blogosphere. So here are yer wordles for Barack Obama, John McCain, Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, in that order (I’ve used different colour schemes for the Democratic and Republican nominees to make it easier to distinguish them).

The Obama & Biden wordles look identical to me… (if the first 8 comments all say this, feel free to delete this one).

Notice in the Palin wordle how the phrase “MAN / SMALL ONE” jumps out. Guess she must have accidentally walked in on John McCain in the private jet restroom.

I notice the words “John” and “McCain” in Obama’s and Biden’s wordles far more than “Obama” in McCain’s or Palin’s. I wonder whether that means something.

I’m not convinced of the worth of the Wordles. Here’s a big “John”, and I have to search around for a slightly differently shaded “McCain”. It’s not an intuitively obvious evocation of the various speeches given.
It is, however, clear, that both the Republicans are as usual running against Washington, telling us that the fix for eight years of corrupt Republican administration is … a new minty fresh Republican team. Yeah, that’ll git her done.

I’m puzzled by the design choice to use dark blue lettering on a black background. Was readability not very high on your design criteria?

Wired beat you to it:

I actually had done a couple of wordles, for Obama, McCain, and Palin, but no one visits my dusty and unknown corner of the blogosphere ;)

One element that jumps out to me is that in McCain’s Wordles the word “fight” is very prominent. I wonder if this alludes to his support for the war overseas, or ‘fighting’ in general?

Where is John McCain’s POW, his answer to every controversial issue?

D.C. – if you listened to McStain’s speech, he prefaced almost everything he said with “I’m going to fight…” At the end, he kept yelling “Stand up and fight!” over and over and over again.
That is his mindset – you have to ‘fight’ everything and everyone over everything. Obama on the other hand says to work together…

Letter to McCain
What’s up with McCain? I think he might be losing the plot. Not impossible at his age, but just look at it… His wife owns a beer company but he refuses to share. He thinks flip-flops is a policy strategy instead of shoes. He doesn’t know that a chick that smiles at you doesn’t mean she is hot or a running mate. He shows some man-love by hugging Dubya but then denies they are having an affair. He thinks del.icio.us is a vetting process and he scares little Republican kids. Shame, poor old man. I wrote him a letter to give him a few tips on how to deal with these and a few other problems at http://angryafrican.net/2008/09/09/a-letter-to-john/
