A pretty unpromising start.

Received wisdom is that it took a while to become what it is, presumably on account of the in-jokes. I remember many of the Rushton series from the early 90s, and worry that it’s all just a little too meta these days. (Perhaps the whole point is that you know when the jokes are coming.)

Best to enjoy it while they’re all still with us, and taking the rise out of the insufferable Nigel Rees.
