Ping pong reloaded

by Eszter Hargittai on March 2, 2006

I started playing ping pong again a few weeks ago so I may appreciate this more than most, but I don’t think you have to be a practitioner for it to be worth a look.

While we’re on the topic of ping pong, check out this massively multiplayer online pong game. It’s not so much that it’s hours of fun (it’s not), what’s intriguing is that people come up with and create these things.

If all this has gotten you in the mood for some pong then try king pong [requires Shockwave]. It’s a pretty good version of a game that probably has hundreds if not thousands of variants.

I guess at this point I should probably include this here: Time Sink!.

UPDATE: The world smallest pong game is also worthy of a link here (I forget how I first came upon it a few weeks ago).

Thanks to Geeked for the Ping pong link and Waxy for the MMOP link. I found King Pong all by myself (well, with a little help from a search engine).

I’m not sure I quite understand what’s going on in the MMOPG… I saw the ball bounce in some mysterious places, but I couldn’t tell in what way I (or anyone else for that matter) was a “player”, since there didn’t seem to be any paddles.

The paddles are on the right and left, as usual. The idea is, as I understand it, that several people (the numbers are above the play area) are controlling the paddle. I think each bubble on the right and left around the paddles represents one player. Each player contributes to where the paddle is, but no one player has full say in where it ends up when the ball comes around.

How about organizing a TABLE TENNIS tournament among university faculty of the chicago area!! I only need to dust up my racquet and we’re game!!

Yup, definitely table tennis (unless you are doing it in a garage)

Signed,

Former table tennis militant who could probably kick ass in the Chicago university faculty area if it weren’t for the fact that he stopped playing competitively years ago and is living nowhere near Chicago ;-)

I seem to recall playing hours and hours of table tennis, rather than ping pong, in garages. It’s only ping pong if (a) you’re doing it while drinking or (b) if you were doing it while drinking it wouldn’t make much difference to the quality. Admittedly, both criteria are much easier to meet in garages.

“It’s only ping pong if (a) you’re doing it while drinking or (b) if you were doing it while drinking it wouldn’t make much difference to the quality.”

I know of a tournament in Belgium where the winner of a game had to drink a glass of heavy Belgian beer. No need to tell you that lower ranked players ended up beating top level players nearing the end of the tournament :-)

Whether electronically or manual, ping pong is a great game. But ystop slandering already, the name of the game is TABLE TENNIS!

Now then, we definitely need a CT bloggers/readers TABLE TENNIS tournament!! After all, Daily Kos has its convention, why not a CT Galactic Table Tennis Championship… played in Eszter’s garage with lotsa beer and wine!

Well, if anyone’s interested in a Chicagoland faculty ping pong (no need to shout) tournament, let me know.;-) The ceilings in my garage are too low for this, but I’m sure we can find a location. I hate beer, maybe I’ll take chocolate as registration fee.

I’m game and I’m in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

I’m not faculty of anything.. in fact, not even a graduate of anything, yet, but I am both an avid CT reader and a resident of Chicago. (Clark/Broadway/Diversey, to be specific.)

“why not a CT Galactic Table Tennis Championship… played in Eszter’s garage with lotsa beer and wine!”

Shouldn’t that be a CT Championship series, like F1, with rounds in each locale where there is a CT Principal?

Steven – You didn’t say if you play ping pong.

Maybe what we need is a Chicagoland CT get-together regardless of ping pong interests.

Vivian – Good point, we can start a Series.

I’m not very good at it…but isn’t that the point?
