it almost looks as if the crane moves towards the viewer (because of the shape of the clouds, I guess).

It really does. What a dramatic, menacing picture!

Perhaps the sense of advance lies in the asymmetry of the shadows which suggests one “leg†( the viewers’s left) has moved forward of the other.
The crane is “walking.â€

I hate to point out the obvious, but the feet on the left are visible, and appear closer to the viewer than those on the right, which are obscured. The ominous shadow may also add to the impression of movement.
