Murder in the Cathedral

This bit from the “New York Daily News”:http://www.nydailynews.com/news/story/356814p-304125c.html

bq. Cheney and Libby spend hours together in the course of a day, which causes sources who know both men very well to assert that any attempts to discredit Wilson would almost certainly have been known to the vice president. “Scooter wouldn’t be freelancing on this without Cheney’s knowledge,” a source told the Daily News. “It was probably some off-the-cuff thing: ‘This guy [Wilson] could be a problem.'”

has a rather obvious “historical analogy”:http://www.kensmen.com/catholic/customschristmasx.html, although the language of “Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?” has a better ring to it than the sub-mafioso “this guy could be a problem.” Still, I don’t imagine we’re going to see a public ceremony of repentance and ritual scourging any time soon.

Repentance, no. Ritual scourging–albeit of a sublimated kind–we have our hopes…

I now wonder if the person who gave the name “Valerie Flame” to Judith Miller wasn’t Cheyney himself. That would explain why she asked that her testimony to the grand jury be limited to Libby, and why she can’t “remember” who told her the name.

Has anyone looked into the possibility of prosecuting Libby on the sole grounds of having the nickname “Scooter”?

We all live in hope and I’m open to guidance but I’m still waiting to see any signs of this bit from the Bush administration:

“The last temptation is the greatest treason: to do the right deed for the wrong reason.”
[TS Eliot: Murder in the Cathedral (1935)]

I note that the “sub-mafioso” language you ascribe to Cheney is actually the language of “a source”, deep in speculative contemplation.

In my fevered imagination, Cheney said:

“Fuck Wilson. I want him fucking fucked, you understand? I want his balls in a fucking vise! Destroy him, and destroy everyone who’s touched him. Fuck his wife, his kids, whatever. He’s a fucking grease spot. Oh, hi, George. We were just talking about Joe fucking Wilson. Yeah, I’m on it.”

A little odd, though, that outing his wife was their best move if what they wanted was to destroy the fella himself.

Couldn’t they find anything at all in Wilson’s bio to make him suffer? Look at poor John Kerry, whose battle wounds clearly show him being a traitor and lowlife. Look at Scott Ritter – child molester… Richard Clarke with “weird aspects” in his personal life…

The ‘his wife sent him’ smear seems so very gentle in comparison. Really.
